The Latino Photography Project, launched in 2003, was an answer to GRO’s question: How do we engage creatively with the twenty per cent of the West Marin population who are Latino? It began with a photography/literacy class taught by Luz Elena Castro which led to yearly exhibitions around a documentary theme.

Over the following years, the class has taken on the issues of the immigrant experience, Main Street, housing, sustainability, bridge-building, food and culture, and the environment. Participant photographs sometimes appear in the local paper, and selections of photos travel to numerous other sites and satellite shows throughout the county to venues such as public libraries, Toby’s gallery, Art Works Downtown which hosted the 20-year retrospective exhibition, and the Bolinas Museum.

With this exhibition, Mi Vida / My Life, the participants of Gallery Route One’s Latino Photography Project are showing a collection of photographs that reflect their daily lives in a very personal way and exploring aspects of life that give it deeper meaning.

Working with instructors Todd Pickering and Rosa Rodriguez, participants were inspired to share their observations of childhood; the identity associated with being born and raised on a ranch; personal self-reflection; the aspects of Mexican culture that was carried with them in their hearts to wherever they currently live; the vital importance of family life; and a deep and abiding sense of spirituality and reverence for God’s creation.
