How Are Local Night Spots Supporting Emerging Musicians?
    BY Kate Fitzsimmons
    Chris Porter, Sweetwater

Musicians suffered during the pandemic when music venues were shuttered and stage experiences were in short supply. Luckily, even though some of Marin’s great establishments closed their doors, others like Smileys, Mac’s and Sweetwater took time to reinvent themselves in ways that will support emerging talent even more.

    BY Kate Fitzsimmons
    ELM string quartet

High school seniors start college applications this Fall. One from San Rafael's Canal neighborhood is reaching for some top colleges. Jane Kramer, of Enriching Lives Through Music, thinks she'll succeed at her dreams.
Like ELM, Youth in Arts has seen students blossom from the arts when any subject integrates visual arts, drama, dance, and music.

Marin Mixtape, Volume III: Live Music Returns
    BY Zack Ruskin

In the ongoing process to establish safe and viable ways for the art form to return, it has felt at times like live music had befallen a premature demise. However, in lieu of a vaccine, there’s always the tremendous power of resiliency to remember as well.

While San Francisco may enjoy the lion’s share of musical mentions in the region, Marin has its own legacy of namechecking, defined by the Urban Dictionary as “how people look cool by association by naming a famous place or person.”

Recorded in Marin: Marin County Mixtape
    BY Zack Ruskin
    the-plant

Marin County’s rich legacy as a haven for musicians is arguably one of the region’s best kept secrets. While some artists are unquestionably associated with the area – the Grateful Dead and Metallica are two prime examples – they are not the only bands who have chosen Marin County as their base of operations.
