A San Francisco Bay Area tradition,  BOX SHOW™ is an annual showcase of 150 artists——their inventive, ingenious, whacky, brilliant works of box art. It’s amazing what can emerge from the starting point of a simple wooden box

27 years ago, Gallery Route One in Point Reyes initiated a surprising project in support of the growing artistic community. It gives wooden boxes to Bay Area artists and asks them to create anything they wish.

THE BOX SHOW™ is a much-anticipated annual event. The artworks are auctioned off and the proceeds support GRO’s wide-ranging community art programs. The exhibition is a brilliant showcase for Bay Area artists, a popular eclectic exhibition that brings thousands of art lovers and artists to the rural West Marin town.

HOW IT WORKS:

For THE BOX SHOW™, Gallery Route One distributes 150 identically sized wooden boxes to 150 artists and aspiring community members, all eager to show their originality and creativity with this unique three-dimensional form. For the third year in a row, we are proud to say that our boxes were built by the woodshop students of Tomales High School. Two months later, an incredibly diverse exhibit of artwork occupies the gallery for four weeks.

The opening reception and kick-off party will be held at the gallery on Saturday, August 29th from 3-5 PM. This is a great opportunity for the public to meet the Box Artists who support GRO’s programs by gifting us their artworks. Bidders will be able to bid online at the gallery’s website or by directly accessing the auction site. Join us at the in-person opening! And watch a Virtual Tour on the GRO website soon after opening day. Over the course of the show, bidders are welcome to bid as often as they wish: our auction site monitors competing bids as they accumulate for each piece.

THE BOX SHOW™ is Gallery Route One’s largest fundraiser of the year, supporting art in the greater community with outreach programs such as the Latino Photography Project,Artists in the Schools, the Fellowship Program, and the Visiting Artist Program, where visiting artists exhibit in the Project Spacewith work addressing issues of the environment, immigration, and social justice.

The boxes tell many stories, from the zany to the hilarious, beautiful, meditative, and philosophical. THE BOX SHOW™ is enjoyable for everyone! Come and experience the inventive and ingenious ways art can be created when starting with a plain wooden box!
